  • The date of this picture is way out. We moved out of our house in Fletching Road in the summer of 1982 and it would have been right in the middle of all of that building work. I would have said that this was 1983/84

    By Andy Mountford (24/03/2009)
  • I remember Michael Mountford who lived at Fletching Road. Is Andy Mountford his father? I used to go to Whitehawk School and Michael’s favourite group was the Beatles.

By Denise Shops nee Moore (25/03/2009)
  • It would be a little difficult for me to be Michael’s dad as I am his younger brother and he is still a Beatles nut. We lived in Fletching Road up until 1982.

    By Andy Mountford (27/03/2009)
  • Hi Andy, I didn’t realise Michael had a younger brother; he must be in his fifties now, how is he doing.  My Nan lived at 88 Wiston Road, and then she moved to Swanborough Drive. The Young family lived at Fletching Road; Carol was my friend at school.

By Denise Shops (nee moore) (27/03/2009)
  • Hello Denise: I remember the Youngs. They lived about ten houses along from us. There were two girls, one was blonde and the other dark. I think the darker one was Carol. They had a brother called Huey. I still bump into him from time to time. Did they also have a brother that died in a canoe accident off Brighton in the early 70s?
Mike is 52, but he still acts like a kid and he is still playing in a band. I will add the link to their web page at the end of this message. Where did you live at the time? It’s such a shame that the old place has gone and all the old characters with it. I loved growing up in Whitehawk and i would give anything to go back to the late 70s early 80s. Brill time. http://www.parlophones.co.uk/ Let me know what you think of the web page.

    By Andy Mountford (29/03/2009)
  • Hi Andy, been on parlophone’s site. Michael hasn’t changed that much since he was 14. His hair was a little longer. The site is very interesting. I bet he still has the Beatles book I bought him for his birthday. I lived at 69 Maresfield Road, then Newick Road and Barcoombe Road, Moulscoombe. Thanks for writing to me. I have always wondered what has happened to all the people I knew back then. I have lived in Yorkshire for 32 years now. Married to a lovely man and have three children.

  • I have to agree with Andy, I was one of the last to move from Twineham Road which was the weekend Diana and Charles married in 1983. I would have said the picture is around 84/85.

    By Simon Belcher (14/06/2009)
  • Sorry – Diana and Charles married in 1981! So picture probably was around 1983/84.

  • Wow, Wiston Road. My nan lived at 41 Wiston Road now no longer by the green. What memories. Does anyone remember the Adams Family? There were 12 of them through 1944 to 73. What memories of Mrs Tucker and everyone seemed to have there key on a bit of string through the door. Can you do that nowadays? Nope, you’d be robbed as soon as you walked down the road. How times have changed! Daughter of Primrose Adams.

    By Sarah Adams (06/02/2010)
  • I remember a Les Adams who was one of our ‘gang’ of scamps in Whitehawk Road, but I’m not sure we are talking about the same family. He was about my age, and I was 7 in 1944.

    By Dennis Grier (20/03/2010)
  • My mum should remember the Tuckers if it is the right one. I think Terry was the one who took our photos when we were babies. My nan lived at 88 Wiston Road, and Mrs Howell used to lived next door and I also remember the Backhouses, they also lived at Wiston Road. My nan was called Edith Ingham-Law she had my mum named Sheila, Mary, Joan and my uncles Ted and John. My mum’s friend was Sally Warmer, so I do hope you could remember our family.

  • I had great memories of growing up in Whitehawk. I lived at 89 Wiston Road, I think it was the late 70s. My mother’s name is Miriam Harris, my late nan was Mary Ancell. I hate Whitehawk as it now, I remember it was such a laugh, and that everyone was friendly.

    By Alan Harris (06/01/2011)
  • My mother had a good friend called Mrs Tucker, my mother’s name was Elsa Dawson and we lived at 158 Wiston Road. I remember the old estate layout and of course when it doesn’t remind us of our past we dislike change.

  • Does any one remember the Rolf Family? Living in 57 road, Whitehawk from the 1960s onwards?

    By Lee Rolf (08/01/2012)
  • I used to live at 93 Wiston Road. To one side were the Dykes and their children Mary & Debbie, and the other side were Joe & Pauline and their children whose names all started with an M: Maryanne, Michelle, Mark, cannot remember the others. Down the road lived “Buster” as I knew him. We moved to London when I was 11 and I have been back to Brighton since but the other week I actually brought my family to Wiston Road and was so disappointed to see what it looks like now. I am pretty sure there used to be a “big green” we all used to play on. I attended St Mary’s C of E primary school and remember Mrs Bird was my teacher. I have some wonderful memories of running up and down the race-course.

    By Debbie Joseph (03/05/2012)
  • Hi Debby. Yes there was a big green! I too have fond memories growing up in Whitehawk, then! We lived there from 1963 till 1967 – big open spaces from what I remember.

    By Lee Rolf (22/05/2012)
  • Hi Andy, I remember Michael. I used to be in the same class as him. I also remember your brother Brian- what great days they were. I used to live at number 8 Fletching Road oposite the Newlands, Russ and Steve. We had so much fun back then. You’re right

    By Willie Parker (13/08/2012)
  • Hello Willie. Last time I saw you, was when you refereed one of our matches at Preston Park. How are you mate? Brian is ok. Living in Woodingdean these days and John is over in Saltdean near me. Nice to hear from you.

    By Andy Mountford (09/10/2012)
  • Nice to hear from you too.

    By Julie Mountford (10/10/2012)
  • Yes, I live in Wiston Rd- that is were I was brought up (144 Wiston Rd). I remember the old veg van knocking me over. Anyone who remembers me, hi .

  • Hello all. Does anyone remember the Card family in Fletching Road? I was good friends with Martin, Andy, Steve, Linda. I lived in Nuthurst Road. Martin joined the army – 2 Paras, when he left school and was sent to the Falklands in 82 and came back a bit shocked. The last I’ve heard is that Martin works for a company that sends him abroad at short notice. I saw him in 2006 in Spain and he’s gone from that skinny kid to be built like a brick house. Mart, I hope you are well.

    By Johny Davies (20/11/2013)
  • Hi, all does anyone remember the Card family at 22 Flething Road? I lived in Nuthurst Road. Martin joined the army, 2 Paras, when he left school and went to war in the Falklands in 82. He came back a different person I think. The last I heard was that he moved to Thailand in 2006 and is a merc. I wish him well and all the Card family.

  • Anyone remember John Wheeler who lived in Whitehawk facing the racecourse? Not sure if he lived at number 9 Whitehawk Ave?

    By Joan Griffiths (14/08/2014)
  • Hi Johny. I remember the Card family – I used to live next door with my family at No.24, our name was Newington. Brian and Sonia used to have a posh front room with a lot of royal mugs, plates etc. They were a really nice family.

    By Kim Ayres (24/04/2015)
  • Hi Joan Griffiths. If it’s the same John Wheeler, then he’s my dad:-) He’s 60 now. Lived and grew up there.

    By Cassie Wheeler (24/10/2015)
  • Hi, I remember the Card family, the Newlands  and the Youngs. I lived next door to the Young family and the Back family. My name was Seabourne and we lived at number 17 Fletching Road until I married in the early 70s.

    By Janet Chapman (18/01/2016)
  • I was due to go to Falklands – was on standby to move. Newingtons – Hello Kim  - hello I bet they gave you a Spitfire or a Vulcan? Your dad was wonderful man. I remember Willie he belted a football and it hit the kerb hit him full face he staggered home! Best friends with Andy Michael Brian John Mountford. John i need to plunder more foliage for you. Some amazing stories, memories to share. Some very very tragic stories.  But I remember Seabourne family, you were very articulate and I always liked you. But your parents would never permit you ever to too talk to the likes of me.

  • I use to live in Nuthurst Road. I lived next door to the ‘Mittens’ I had a sister called Lorraine and a brother called Derek.

    By Darren (23/03/2018)
  • Some of the names on this thread are a real blast from the past. I used to live two doors down from Mike, Andy and Julie who were at No 33 Fletching road. I lived with my Grandparents at No 29 (the only house with a red front door). Many of the kids in the street used to congregate outside 29 when Jacques Maglia’s Formula 2 Lotus was parked on its trailer on the drive.I also recall Terry who lived on the other side of the road about five doors down. As to the picture I suspect it was taken mid 83. I recall passing through when most of the housing had been demolished but clearly remember two terrace blocks 21-27 and 29-35 still standing.

  • Does anyone remember the Harriott’s who lived at 3 Fletching road. The Ganders and Lustards were our immediate neighbours. My siblings are Gwen, Grace, Donald, Doris, Leonard ,Dennis, Joan, Kathleen, Christine, Audrey and little me ,Michael. My family left for Australia in September 1954 and settled in Mount Gambier, South Australia where I still reside. I am the youngest, born 1950 , Allan Bond was my playmate.

    By Michael Harriott (13/10/2019)
  • Were any of the Mountfords mentioned here related to Chris Mountford? I was at Lancaster University with him (1964-1967).

    By Nigel Searle (30/08/2021)
  • Chris Elms, Hello Mate just seen your post from a couple of years ago how are you ? I remember your Grandad very well too. And to Chris Serle. No not a Direct relative to us as far as I know but our name is very common in the Midlands.
