Recognise anyone here from the 1960s?

Here are some old school photographs of St Joseph’s School. Perhaps you know some of the faces – if so leave a comment below. Maybe you have got some more photographs we can see?

If you would like to find out how to add text and photographs to the site, we have an excellent tutorial here.

  • I was very interested to see these photos of St Josephs School, especially the school sports day which was held every year in Preston Park. I have a very similar one and at first I thought it was the same. I can name several people—L to R Ann Parker, ??? Deirdre?, ?? Douglas?Cheverton, Vincent Brown. I would think the year would probably be about 1950-51. It was also nice to see the first Communion procession outside the school, that took me back to my first Communion in 1949. I remember the breakfast we had afterwards—-hard boiled eggs!

  • I think the nun is Sister Concepta who taught the first infants class (when they were at Milton Road anyway).

    By Mary Funnell (02/01/2012)
  • Whoops! My mistake! It was Sister Carmella, not Concepta who was teaching the reception class. She taught my sister in 1960. She was a lovely, kind and gentle nun at the Milton Road site. She always had a smile on her face and loved the children. The picture shows her in the new Davey Drive School. Before Sister Carmella, Mrs. Arzonie taught the reception class and she taught me when I started in 1957.

  • Sister Carmella was my first teacher in 1948 at St. John the Baptist School. As already said by Mary Funnell she was as kind as can be. Even when I was in my teens she still remembered my name when we met. I think that she ended her days at the St. Georges Retreat in Ditchling, not too sure about that. I had often said that I would go and visit her but when I got around to it she had passed away, something I have always regretted. I can remember as a child being on the poor side when Sister Carmella would visit and produce tins of soup and other food from her habit. One of the kindest people that I have ever met in my life.

  • Is Stephanie Burns any relation to Carol Burns who was in my class during our time at Fitzherbert from 1954 to 1958 in Woodingdean? Happy times they were.

  • I can remember walking to the Lewes Rd with the school to see the Queen when she came to lay the foundation stone at the University building at the bottom of the Avenue. We had our photo in the Brighton & Hove Gazette.

  • Stephanie Burns was in my class at St. Joe’s.  We were in a little gang of two girls (us) and mostly boys who walked or ran home from Davey Drive for their lunch. In the First Communion picture I am fifth from the left. In the class photo of Stephanie in the front desk, Patsy Lemon is sitting next to her, and behind Patsy is Victor Craggs.  On the far left, at the back, is Gordon Rodriguez, who sadly recently passed away.  I remember Stephanie fell off a railing in Hollingdean (or Hollingbury) Road and was hit by a bus on the way home from school one day.  She had a remarkable recovery – but I recall she was great fun, a bit of a tomboy.

  • Hi Frances, I was in the same class as your sister (Bernadette I think). I was born in 1945. I know you were a big family of girls and had one brother who was a scout. My father was the scoutmaster. If you made your first communion in the 1960s you must be much younger. Either that or you are not one of the Storrow’s I’m thinking of.

    By Teresa Scrase-Davey (16/01/2014)
  • Hi Teresa, yes, I am the youngest of the Storrows! There were seven of us – two boys and five girls.  The scout was Joe.  My sister Bernie (Bernadette) with very blonde hair, was born in 1945, and I recognise your surname (Scrase) from my older siblings. Did you have any other brothers and sisters?

By Frances Haragan (nee Storrow) (27/01/2014)
  • Hi Frances, yes I remember Bernadette had long blonde plaits. Although I don’t remember ever seeing her again after leaving St. Jo’s, I have a clear memory of her in the classroom. I hope she is well. I had brothers Tony, Patrick and Alan. Unfortunately I didn’t have a sister. You are so lucky to have 4. My father was the scoutmaster at St. Jo’s and took the scouts to Ashdown Forest every year where there was a scout campsite.  He used to run jumble sales at the school to raise money to buy tents etc. A Mr. Hellett would transport all the camping equipment to the campsite for them. It was great fun helping at the jumble sales. Say hello to Bernadette for me.

  • Hi Frances (nee Storrow) & Teresa Scrase-Davey. I remember both of your families. Joe Storrow was my best friend at St Josephs and subsequently Xaverian College. If I remember rightly, the Storrow family was: Peter, Mary, Joe, Teresa, Angela, Bernadette and Frances. Patrick Scrase was in my class at St Josephs and, as Teresa says, her dad, Harry, was our scout master. I’d love to hear more about what became of everybody over the years. Tom Paul

  • Hi Tom, sorry but I don’t recall your name. Will mention you to Patrick next time we’re talking; Patrick became a Pilot. My father died almost 20 years ago aged 81. I left Brighton when I was 18 and haven’t kept in touch with anybody from Junior school so don’t have any information on others. Did you go on the scout camps to Ashdown Forest.  My mother used to take us on a day visit while they were there for a week in the summer. I remember my father telling us that the scouts crept into his tent one night while he was asleep and hid his artificial leg (a war injury). He laughed about it to us.

    By Teresa Scrase-Davey (30/01/2014)
  • Hi Teresa. We went on many camps with the scouts. I don’t recall Ashdown Forest but I do recall camping in a farmer’s field near some woods. The culprits of the artificial leg exploit were Joe Storrow, Peter Coomber and myself. Harry didn’t laugh at the time but he was a good sport. Please remember me to Patrick next time you’re in touch with him.

    By Tom Paul (31/01/2014)
  • Hi Tom,  Ahhh so you were one of the jokers!  I’m sure he didn’t laugh at the time, probably in case the mischief got worse but he laughed about it to us when he came home. Why of all things do I remember that?  I guess this must be about 56 years ago? Will mention you to Patrick.

    By Teresa Scrase-Davey (02/02/2014)
  • I remember Harry Scrase as the dad of Pat Scrase or Scrasy as we called him at school. I did go with Patrick to a scout meeting when I was a pupil at Fitzherbert, I think at St. Joseph’s church if I remember rightly. Owing to the long walk home to Black Rock after the scout meeting I joined the Air Training Corps (2234 squadron) instead in Warwick Street which was a bit nearer to home, although I have always been a scout- minded individual at heart: being altruistic in life and always being prepared for the worse and truly believing in sod’s law, and still do to this day. My father also had an artificial leg also due to being wounded in a war. I would love to chew the fat with Patrick, if he had a mind to, over old times. Just in case he does my e-mail address is mike.peirson43@gmail.com

  • Hi Teresa and Tom! I will say “hello” to Bernie from you Teresa. Tom, you nearly got it right – except Bernie and Angie are the other way around. I’m not surprised Joe was one of the culprits regarding the artificial leg – wait til I remind him!  Basically, Peter was in the RAF and then the MOD, Joe RAF then teaching at Salesian College, Battersea, Mary taught at St. Wilfred’s in Crawley then worked at ICL Computers, Theresa worked for British Rail in the Tax Department, Bernie was a Nursery/Reception teacher, Angela went to Jamaica and taught there, and I worked for Lloyds Bank Trustee Department and then Panama Shipping doing secretarial work.  We are all retired now, with various children and some grandchildren.  All are well, although Mary died back in 2006. Best wishes to you both, Frances.

By Frances Haragan (nee Storrow) (04/02/2014)
  • Hi again Frances. Thanks for the potted history of the Storrow family. I have previously communicated with Angela via this site and had heard of your sad loss of Mary. I also told Angela that Joe came back from Singapore in 1965 to attend my wedding but that we had since lost touch. I understand that Joe is not a computer man so it’s unlikely that he will get in touch with me. When you next speak to him, you might give him my email address tom.paul@ntlworld.com and tell him I’d love to hear from him if he ever has the inclination. Glad to hear that the rest of the family are all going strong. Myself, I have 2 children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Kind regards. Tom.

  • I remember two faces from the above photos which I think are from 1962-63. Penny and Patrick. Penny lived in Coldean and used to travel on the school bus. Strange but I have just watched the local news and seen Fiona Southwell, nee Randel, my first girlfriend from St Joseph’s. I remember the snow in the 60s when we all had to walk home to Coldean. I remember some names: Eammon Costello, he came to my birthday party, Penny Baldock was also there, Russell Smith. I remember Patrick Oates, Vincent Moss, Sean O’Hallaron, Deborah Winydom. I was there with my brothers Jan and Kazik.

  • Mick Peirson, yes, Stephanie is the sister of Carol.  She will be chuffed to think anybody remembers her!

    By Penny Hajduk (25/02/2015)
  • I remember Carol Burns with affection as we were in the same class in Fitzherbert in Woodingdean from the age of 11 until we left school. Carol and I had a very brief flirtation on the bus home from school where I received my first kiss in my teenage years from her. I always remember that the girls in 4a always used to wear their cardigans back to front, with the buttons at the back. This must have been a sort of school rebellion as they were also wearing shocking pink or green socks or even white socks, this caused a lot of commotion in the school. How trivial to think that coloured or white socks were a source of trouble! If I remember rightly Carol lived by the Gaiety cinema in Lewes Road, by the little kids playground. Sweet times never forgotten, and Carol also never forgotten.
