Class photographs c1930s
My mother, Nellie Joyce Bampton, was born in Bristol Road, Brighton in December 1919. Soon after her family moved to Upper St James Street. My mother went to St Mary’s School in Mount Street & then to Varndean.
According to words on the reverse of the first photograph here, it shows the scholarship winners in 1930 at St Mary’s School. My mother, Nellie Joyce Bampton is seated middle front row probably aged about 10.
The second photograph states that it is the netball team at St Mary’s School around 1930. My mother is 3rd from left in the middle row. It would seem that the other two girls in the top photo were also in the netball team.
The final photograph states that is the Science 6th Form, Varndean in 1936. My mother is in the middle of the front row.

My name was Ruby Young, born in Brighton in 1923 and I lived at No. 15 Eastern Road. I went to St Mary’s School from approx. 1930/35. The Headmistress was Miss Apthorpe and the deputy was Mr Cooper. My teacher was Miss Mullins. Two other teachers that I remember we’re Miss Dawson and Miss Smithers.
i was friendly with boy named Donald Fadden, and a girl called Iris Kennet. We went swimming once a week to St Luke’s School or to the North Road Baths. We went to Church once a week as it was a Church school. I don’t remember anyone getting the strap, but a few fingers were rapped with the cane.
It was a long long time ago, but I have some good memories of those days.
Hi Ruby, just seen your comment on my page about my mother Florence Groves who lived in Riflebutt Road. I would love to get in touch if possible. Best wishes, Barbara Parsons.
I have just read your thread. Iris kennet was my grandmother and she was born in Hove. I’m wondering if it’s the same person that you talk of.
Is my mum in the netball photo, Pat McCabe, does anyone know? franceshymas@icloud.com
